1974 Nickel Dollar Varieties
One of our good customers, Robert, has written an interesting article about the 1974 nickel dollar varieties. A large selection of these dollars will be available on our 3rd auction on November 17th, 2018.
Introduction:
I don’t know of any other Canadian dollar that has more or such interesting varieties. It is either a blessing or a curse but I have become addicted to the 1974 Winnipeg varieties. Fortunately, other than the first few listed varieties, most are relatively inexpensive to obtain. If you are patient some of your discoveries will become listed varieties.
Observations:
There are few things that I have found that I haven’t seen mentioned anywhere.
- Like many other years, the 1974 dollar has some with a double strike, rotation and die cracks.
- Finally after many years, we are seeing varieties listed in the second 0
- (new landscape). I have a number of varieties on this side.
- There are both round and square rims. I haven’t found any varieties on the square rims. Maybe that is why they are never mentioned.
- VCR#2 is slightly rotated. It also has 2 types. The normal one and one with connected denticles.
- VCR#4 also has some examples with connected denticles.
- VCR#12 has some examples with a minor rotation.
- VCR#16 has some examples with connected denticles.
- VCR#18 has some examples with die cracks in ‘CANADA’ and connected denticles.
- My VCR#32 is an interesting variety that probably should be a recognized type. It also has some examples with connected denticles and die cracks.
- The recognized varieties as shown in the 2013 Charlton catalogue stop at
- vcr #19. Mine go up to vcr #48.
- Charlton has 2
varieties on the modern skyline. I have 5 more.
